Nature
“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.” Henry David Thoreau
As I paint heavenly scenes I am constantly reminded of the beauty we are blessed with here on this earth. As a boy, my brothers and I would pack our rucksacks with field guides, binoculars, and snacks (of course) and head out for a day of exploring meadows, rivers, and forests. Between excursions, using materials provided by my mother (also an artist), I created drawings and paintings of the animals, birds, and plants we studied.
These outings progressed into summer backpacking trips to Isle Royale National Park (shown in one of the paintings here). For the last 35 years I have taken groups on winter camping trips up north near Lake Superior. I’ve been so pleased that my three children have inherited this love as well and have accompanied me many times on these snowy adventures. Many of the large oil paintings I have completed center on Biblical or Christian Medical themes but I have to admit that I always have a twinge of delight when the painting has animals included in the composition such as shown in “First Sabbath in Eden”. Recently, I had the privilege of creating a series of paintings of the Seven Days of Creation as described in the Creation section of this gallery.
